How to make a Ristretto with a Nespresso Lattissima +

  1.  Place a 3 oz. pre-warmed demitasse cup under the machine spout
  2.  Place a Nespresso pod in the machine
  3.  Press the “Espresso” button and count to 15 seconds
  4.  Press the “Espresso” button again to stop the flow

The drink yields 25 ml (< 1 oz.)

I’ve enjoyed these Nespresso Pod Flavors in this recipe:

 RistrettoRistretto, ApreggioApreggio

A ristretto is a “short” shot of coffee and meant to extract the same amount of flavor in less water.

Café Miel

16 Jan

How to make a Café Miel with a Nespresso Lattissima +

  1. Skim Milk - 0% Attach the milk tank filled with skimmed (no fat) milk
  2. Froth Level 1 Set froth level to 1
  3.  Place a pre-warmed, 4 oz. demitasse cup under the spout
  4.  Insert a Nespresso Pod in the machine
  5. Cappuccino Button Press “Cappuccino” button
  6.  Stir in a teaspoon of honey
  7.   Finish off with a sprinkle of cinnamon

I’ve enjoyed these Nespresso Pod Flavors in this recipe:

Dulsão do BrasilDulsão do Brasil

This drink yields approximately 90ml (3 oz.)

A Cafe Miel is essentially an “Antoccino” with a touch of honey and cinnamon.  By using the Dulsao do Brasil capsule, you enhance the hint of honey and malt.  “Miel” is Italian for honey and the drink “Antoccino” means “priceless”.

Cafe Tobio

14 Jan

How to make a Cafe Tobio with a Nespresso Lattissima +

  1.  Place a 3 oz. demitasse 1/2 filled with coffee under machine spout
  2.  Place Nespresso Pod in the machine

I’ve enjoyed these Nespresso Pod Flavors in this recipe:

LivantoLivanto

The drink yields about 3 oz.

A Cafe Tobio is a 1:1 ratio of drip coffee to espresso.  Its commonly used to strengthen a cup of weak coffee while taking out the bitterness of an espresso.  Another version of the Cafe Tobio is a doppio with equal parts drip coffee.

Now, what is a “Tobio”?  How did this drink get its name?  Apparently, its named after the deceased son of Doctor Tenma of Astroboy fame…now if we could just connect what that has to do with coffee.  Hmmm…

12 Jan

How to make a Cafe Zorro with a Nespresso Lattissima +

  1.  Place a large cup under the machine spout
  2.  Remove Nespresso Pod from the machine
  3.  Press “Espresso” Button for hot water
  4.  Press “Espresso” Button again for hot water

  8.  Insert a 2nd Nespresso Pod
  9.  Press “Espresso” Button for 2nd shot of espresso

I’ve enjoyed these Nespresso Pod Flavors in this recipe:

 CapriccioCapriccio, Volluto

The drink yields about 5 oz.

The Cafe Zorro is a “doppio” or double espresso added to hot water in a 1:1 ratio.

Doppio

10 Jan

How to make a Doppio with a Nespresso Lattissima +

  1.  Place a 3 oz. pre-warmed demitasse cup under the machine spout
  2.  Put a Nespresso Pod in the machine
  3.  Press “Espresso” Button
  4.  Remove Nespresso Pod from the machine
  5.  Put 2nd pod in Nespresso machine

I’ve enjoyed these Nespresso Pod Flavors in this recipe:

Ristretto Apreggio Volluto Rosabaya de Colombia

These also work:  any of the “espresso” or “pure origine” pods

The drink yields about 2 oz.

The doppio is simply a “double shot” of espresso.  Given the size, its going to be packed with caffeine so try a lighter intensity like the “Rosabaya de Colombia” and enjoy the roasted flavor and wine tone.

Hot Chocolate – Trader Joe’s

10 Jan

How to make a Hot Chocolate with a Nespresso Lattissima + and Trader Joe’s Instant Hot Cocoa mix

  1. Low Fat Milk - 1% Attach the milk tank filled with 1% (low fat) milk
  2. Froth Level 1 Set froth level to 1
  3.  Place 10 oz. mug under the spout
  4.  Remove any Nespresso Pods from the machine
  5. Latte Macchiato Button Press “Latte Macchiato” button
  6.  Stir in one packet of TJ’s Instant Hot Cocoa mix

This drink yields approximately 190 ml (~ 6 oz.)

The ingredients of the Trader Joe's mixture is extensive; unlike the Starbucks mixture.

This is our favorite hot chocolate (or hot cocoa) recipe so far this season – no need for the whipped cream!  I would make sure to add the hot water cycle (unlike the Starbucks cocoa) as the packet instructions request it – its too creamy without a little hot water.  The Latte Macchiato setting releases 40 ml (~ 1 fl. oz) that makes a difference.

The ingredients of the Starbucks mixture is listed as:  Sugar, Cocoa (processed with Alkali), Vanilla

The ingredients of the Trader Joe’s mixture is listed as: Cane Sugar, Whole Milk Powder, Natural Cocoa Powder, Whey Protein, Tricalcium Phosphate, Stabilizer (Carragenean and Gum Acacia), Emulsifier (Soy Lecithin), Salt, Natural Vanilla Flavor, Vitamin and Mineral Mix (Iron, Niacin [B3], Thiamin [B1], Vitamin A, Riboflavin [B2]). #yikes

Brûléed Cappuccino

9 Jan

Do you have a “culinary torch”?  Have a look at a Williams-Sonoma recipe for Brûléed Cappuccino the espresso is not the hard part of this one!

Café Americano

7 Jan

How to make a Café Americano with a Nespresso Lattissima +

  1.  Place a pre-warmed 3 oz. demitasse cup under the machine spout
  2.  Place a Nespresso pod in the machine
  3.  Press the “Espresso” button
  4.  Remove pod from the machine
  5.  Press the “Espresso” button

I’ve enjoyed these Nespresso Pod Flavors in this recipe:

RistrettoRistretto RomaRoma Indriya from IndiaIndriya from India

The drink yields about 2 oz.

This drink became known as the Americano when US Service Men were stationed in France during World War II.  The espresso commonly served at the French cafés was “watered down” by adding an equal part hot water.  Although not uncommon to dilute an espresso, the act of adding hot water to the espresso is what makes the Café Americano unique.

Because I like the more intense espresso flavors, and this drink calls to dilute the espresso, I recommend a higher intensity flavors listed above.

Macchiato

6 Jan

How to make a Macchiato with a Nespresso Lattissima +

  1. Skim Milk - 0% Attach the milk tank filled with skimmed (no fat) milk
  2. Froth Level 2 Set froth level to 2

  7. Cappuccino Button Press “Cappuccino” button
  8. Cappuccino Button Soon after milk begins, press Cappuccino button again

I’ve enjoyed these Nespresso Pod Flavors in this recipe:

VollutoVolluto (gold)

This drink yields approximately 50 ml (~ 1 oz.)

The word “Macchiato” means “stained” in Italian.  The above recipe is a way to get the traditional Macchiato which is a coffee stained with milk.

In Portugal, a caffé macchiato is a café pingado which is coffee with a drop [of milk].

Galão

5 Jan

How to make a Galão with a Nespresso Lattissima +

A Galão is the Portuguese version of the Caffé Latte; however, a galão is served in a tall glass.  Typically, the coffee to milk ratio is 1:3 with very little (if any) froth on top.
